Hyderabad: Salman Nadvi was expelled from the All India Muslim Personal Law Board on Sunday. The AIMPLB member had said that there should be an out of court settlement in the Ayodhya Ram Janambhoomi-Babri Masjid case.
A spokesperson for AIMPLB confirmed that Nadvi has been expelled after recommendations of the disciplinary committee formed to look into the matter.
Nadvi had come out in public with his stand on the issue after a meeting with Art of Living founder Sri Sri Ravi Shankar which drew the ire of the AIMPLB. He had suggested shifting the site of the mosque to settle the dispute.
Following this, a heated argument broke out in the AIMPLB working committee meeting late on Friday with many members demanding action against Naqvi.
CNN-News18 reported on Saturday that action is likely to be initiated against the senior executive board member.
On Saturday, in the general body meeting of AIMPLB, the issue was again discussed, where over 500 people participated. Many participants said that Naqvi should be removed from the Board.
While most people remained tight-lipped about the developments, some openly expressed their disappointment over the issue.
SQR Ilyas, an AIMPLB member, said, “You are talking against the stand of the Board. If you have a different option, then you must talk in meeting and not publically.
Everyone has condemned what happened. You cannot defame the name of the Board. If no action is taken, the image of the board will be affected.”
Miffed after Friday’s meeting, Nadvi too did not attend the second day of the plenary.
Speaking to News18, Nadvi expressed his anger and reiterated his stand on out of court settlement.
“Board says we will wait for the Court verdict. But in my opinion, today’s scenario demands other solution as well. We must not fight and resolve the issue with hatred. We should work towards unity & harmony and a solution with consensus. I was expressing my views in the meeting, but it looked many members had come pre-planned to target me and create an issue,” he said.
AlMPLB on Friday had claimed that there was no divide and the Board unanimously agreed to its stand on the Babri Masjid dispute.
