Salman hit and run case: Mumbai court to pronounce verdict today

A Mumbai sessions’ court is set to pronounce its verdict in the hit-and-run case against Bollywood superstar Salman Khan on Wednesday.

Salman faces the prospect of up to 10 years behind bars, if convicted.

Abdullah Sheikh, the victim, has said that he does not want the actor to be punished, but sought some help in return of the 13 years he lost since the accident.

“I was around 22 years old when the accident took place, my leg was broken. I am not expecting anything from the verdict. I don’t want Salman Khan to be punished, but should get some help in return of the 13 years that I have lost,” Sheikh told ANI.

Salman’s driver Ashok Singh had earlier in March told the Mumbai sessions court that he was driving the car.

Salman, who deposed before the court in Mumbai earlier last month, denied that he was drunk on the intervening night of September 27-28 in 2002 and that he was driving the car at the time of the accident.

The actor is accused of culpable homicide not amounting to murder in the hit-and-run case, a charge that carries a maximum penalty of ten years in prison.

He has been booked under Section 304 A of the Indian Penal Code (rash and negligent driving), 279 (rash driving), 337 (causing minor injuries), 338 (causing major injuries) and 427 (negligence) in connection with the case.

His trial began in the Bandra Magistrate Court in Maharashtra in 2006. The actor was earlier being tried on the charge of death by negligence which carries a maximum prison term of two years. (ANI)
