Lucknow: After Saharanpur Dalit-Thakur clashes, sectarian violence erupted between Dalits and Jats in Meerut, Uttar Pradesh, leaving one dead and nearly two dozen injured.
According to the police report, clashes between Dalits and Jats took place in Gejha village on Monday night over an unimportant issue.
According to the report published in Deccan Herald, a youth belonging to Jat community made provocative remarks against a Dalit person which prompted Dalits to attack the house of a Jat.
Area became tense after Pintu Chaudhary, a Jat youth who had received severe injuries in the clashes died in the hospital late on Monday night.
Following the incident, two persons were arrested by the police. To avoid further clashes, security men have been deployed in large numbers.
It may be recalled that recently, Saharanpur district witnessed huge clashes between Dalits and Thakurs wherein three persons were killed and many were injured.
It is also reported that reacting on the increasing violence against Dalits, Samajwadi Party Chief, Akhilesh Yadav said, “Dalits do not feel safe under this government”. He further said that several incidents of violence against Dalits took place throughout the State soon after Yogi Govt. took charge.
