Kabul, May 10: A Standing committee of the ministry of external affairs ( MEA) has recommended better security for the Indians stationed in Afghanistan.
The committee, chaired by former foreign minister Yashwant Sinha, said in its report to Parliament that security concerns had affected the efficiency of the Indian workforce.
“ The committee has urged the government to strengthen its security apparatus and to ensure the safety of personnel working on Indian projects not only in Afghanistan but also in other countries,” the report said.
The government said Kabul has promised to take the necessary measures.
The Afghan government has provided security to Indian projects. Indian nationals registered with the Kabul Embassy are being regularly advised about the prevailing security situation, the government said.
However, the government was at the receiving end when it came to the delay in the construction of the Afghan parliament building. To avoid such a situation in future, the committee suggested that the government should evolve a mechanism to ensure the completion of projects in “ a time- bound manner”. The government said in reply that it had promptly released funds to the Central Public Works Department ( CPWD).
