Agra: Olympian and former Indian Hockey captain Zafar Iqbal who is also an alumnus of Aligarh Muslim University (AMU), said on Thursday the varsity is caught in political controversies which were also made communal is all because it carries the word ‘Muslim’ in its name.
And looking at the current situation the whole fuss is about the word ‘Muslim’ and these political controversies will cease if the word “Muslim” is removed from its name, TOI reports.
He was reacting to the controversial statements by some BJP leaders who said the varsity is nothing but “a seminary of terrorists” looking at the past events of AMU.
Talking to TOI, Iqbal said, “It is heartbreaking and also incorrect for political leaders to say such things about the university, which has given some of the brightest minds to the country.”
“The word ‘Muslim’ in the university’s name has become a bone of contention. It will be better if the word is dropped.”
