“Saanvli” South Indian women: Sharad Yadav stokes controversy in Parliament

JD (U) president Sharad Yadav on Thursday launched angry outburst in Parliament on “saanvli (dark)” south Indian women during a debate on the Insurance bill in Rajya Sabha.

Mr Yadav began by describing the proposal to raise foreign investment from 26 to 49 % as a symptom of the Indian “affinity for fair skin.”

“The women of south are beautiful, their bodies…their skin …They aren’t made like this here. They know dance,” he comment, winning some scattered amusement.

He even dragged filmmaker Leslee Udwin, whose documentary on the December 16 gang-rape has triggered a huge debate.

“For her, every door must have opened easily. She must have got permissions easily because she is white,” said the 67-year-old.

Everyone is obsessed with fair skin. “In our matrimonials too we look for gori, gori (fair skin),” he said.

Members sitting around him tried to interrupt Mr Yadav but he was unstoppable.

He had controversially used the term “parkati auratein (short-haired women)” to argue against the Women’s Quota Bill.
