S Korea bans import of Japanese food

Seoul, March 30: Amid an increase in traces of different radioactive compounds stemming from Japan’s nuclear disaster, merchants across the world are voicing concern about the possible contamination of food, avoiding Japanese foods across the world.

Korean market sellers say their sales have witnessed a 30 percent drop as a result of unnecessary fear circulated by the media, a Press TV correspondent reported.

“Everything is inspected in Japan, and then again upon entering Korea, so it’s all safe to eat. Yet the news keeps saying that it’s not, which is giving people a negative perception, and makes business suffer,” said a seller at a Korean seafood market.

On March 11, a 9.0-magnitude earthquake was followed by gigantic tsunami waves, disabling the generator supplying power to the Fukushima nuclear plant’s cooling system, and causing hazardous radiation due to overheating.

Japan has announced that nearly 28,000 people have died or are feared dead as a result of the disastrous quake and tsunami.
