Ryot found dead in police custody

Guntur, March 31: A farmer was found dead in police custody at Bapatla Rural Police station in the early hours of Tuesday. The police maintained that Asodhi Nagi Reddy (37), committed suicide.

The police said that the villagers brought Nagi Reddy to the police station and lodged a complaint against him for behaving indecently with a woman following which he was taken into custody. However, on Tuesday, they said he was found hanging and died while being taken to a Government Hospital. Though he was to be lodged in the lock up room, the police said they had to confine him in another room as the lock up was being used to store answer sheets of Class X examinations. But villagers maintain that Mr. Reddy was harassed by the police.
