Senior Russian officials have reportedly insisted that the security fears around the Winter Olympics in Sochi are unfounded, with Deputy Prime Minister Dmitry Kozak saying that the level of danger in Sochi is same as in Boston, London, New York or Washington.
The US Department of Homeland Security warned earlier this week that terrorists could be trying to smuggle explosives on board flights bound for Sochi in toothpaste containers, while several teams have reported receiving unspecified terrorist threats.
However, Sky News reports that ahead of the opening ceremony of the Games, Kozak said that Russian security services are working with colleagues from Europe and North America to minimise the risk of attack, adding that there is no reason to believe that the level of danger in Sochi is greater than at Boston, London, New York or Washington.
Kozak also said that even if the information about the threats and risks are proved, they would be ready with all their ”security organs” to ensure the safety of the Olympic Games and of Sochi.
The report mentioned that Islamist militants have vowed to attack the Games using ”maximum force” as they are being held right on the verge of Russia”s most volatile region – the North Caucasus – the heart of an Islamist insurgency threatening to target these Olympics, and through them Russia”s president himself.
The opening ceremony is due to begin at 4pm UK time on Friday, the report added. (ANI)
