Russia to reject UN resolution on Syria

Moscow, February 16: “In its current form the draft is of an unbalanced character and does not consider our position,” the source told the Interfax news agency on Thursday.

The comment was made ahead of a vote expected later on Thursday on the draft proposed by Arab states.

Earlier this month, the US has tried to impose a resolution against Syria to repeat Libya’s war against the government of Bashar al-Assad, but Russia and China have vetoed the resolution.

On Wednesday, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov criticized the UN Security Council members for their failure to consider Moscow’s proposals regarding Syria.

He added that the UN can play a role in bringing the Syrian conflict to a halt as long as outside intervention is not imposed.

“Intervention from the outside won’t solve this problem,” Lavrov said. “Only intensive dialogue within Syria will bring about a solution.”

Syria has been experiencing unrest since mid-March 2011.

Damascus blames “outlaws, saboteurs, and armed terrorist groups” for the violence, insisting that it is being orchestrated from abroad.
