Rural water projects worth Rs 212 crore taken up

Hyderabad, May 06: In a bid to quench the thirst of rural public, the state government is taking up 41 multi village schemes (MVS), 1,463 single village schemes (SVS) and other supporting programmes covering 2,489 villages with 23.29 lakh population.

Chief Minister K Rosaiah today cleared the proposals for sanctioning Rs 212.38 crore as the state government’s share for the projects being taken up at a cost of Rs 461.73 crore under National Rural Drinking Water Programme (NRDWP).

The state government is taking a step towards providing drinking water in rural areas. It is aimed to cover all villages before the next summer season. As an immediate measure, the officials are transporting drinking water to rural areas where drinking water cannot be supplied through pipelines.

The Chief Minister asked the officials of the rural water supply department to have a 24-hour vigil on the water supply in the villages, particularly during summer. He wanted them to develop regular monitoring of entire water supply system with special focus on the availability and quality of water. He expressed displeasure over complaints from people on unavailability of drinking water during visits to rural areas.

The Central government has already released Rs 467.58 crore for the year 2009-10 under NRDWP to take up the drinking water supply works. Under Phase- II of NRDWP, the state level scheme sanctioning committee has approved another 53 multi village schemes (MVS) and 1,110 single village schemes (SVS) covering 1,818 villages with 16.73 lakh population.

The state government’s share of Rs 174.8 crore in the projects costing Rs 349.6 crore, will be released shortly.
