Rupee weakens by 8 paise against dollar in early trade

Mumbai, June 15: The rupee today lost 8 paise against the dollar in early trade amid weakness in the equity markets. At the Interbank Foreign Exchange market, the domestic unit was quoted 8 paise lower at 46.57 a dollar in early trade.

The rupee had closed higher by 34 paise at 46.49/50 a dollar in the previous session. Dealers said fears of capital outflows after initial selling pressure in the equity markets weighed on the rupee.

The dollar gains against leading currencies in the overseas markets also dampened the rupee sentiment. The Bombay Stock Exchange index, Sensex, fell by 35.91 points to 17,302.26 points in the early trade.
