Rupee Opens Lower at 68.62 Against US Dollar

Mumbai: The rupee today lost 6 paise to 68.64 against the dollar in early trade at the inter-bank foreign exchange market due to appreciation of the US currency overseas.

Increased demand for the dollar from importers added to pressure on the rupee.

Dealers attributed the rupee’s fall to dollar gains against other currencies overseas and a lower opening in the domestic equity market.

On Tuesday, the rupee had gained three paise at 68.58 against the US dollar on mild selling of the American currency by banks and exporters despite a higher greenback in overseas markets.

Meanwhile, the benchmark BSE Sensex fell 141.89 points, or 0.60 per cent, to 23,268.29 in opening trade today.
