Rupee loses 18 paise to 46.76/77 against US dollar

Mumbai, July 02: The Indian rupee dipped by 18 paise to 46.76/77 against the US dollar today amid weak domestic equity markets and late dollar demand from banks and corporates.

At the Interbank Foreign Exchange market, the domestic unit opened slightly better at 46.53/54 from its previous close of 46.58/59 and improved further to 46.50 on the back of initial dollar selling by exporters.

The rupee had resumed higher on dollar selling by banks on the back of an overnight fall in New York market after data showed that US jobless claims rose and pending home sales plunged.

However, it fell to a low of 46.80 before settling at 46.76/77 a dollar.

After moving in and out of positive terrain, the Indian benchmark Sensex today ended lower by over 48 points, or 0.28 per cent, while Asian stocks ended narrowly mixed.
