Mumbai, July 14: The Indian rupee gained 7 paise to 46.69/70 against the US dollar on fresh dollar selling by banks and corporates amid weakness in the American currency overseas.
At the Interbank Foreign Exchange, the domestic unit resumed at 46.54/55 a dollar against its last close of 46.76/77 and improved further to a high of 46.52.
Forex dealers said initial gains in the stock markets helped the rupee rise in early trade. The Indian benchmark Sensex was up by over 181 points in morning deals.
The surge in the rupee value was also attributed to dollar selling by banks on the back of sustained capital inflows from foreign funds.
However, the Sensex later plummeted on profit-booking and ended down by 47.74 points, or 0.27 per cent, which weighed on the rupee sentiment in the later part of the day.
