Rupee falls 11 paise on increased US dollar demand

Falling for the fourth straight day, the rupee on Tuesday weakened by another 11 paise to 60.64 against the Greenback in early trade at the Interbank Foreign Exchange market due to dollar’s gains against other rivals overseas.

Forex dealers said besides dollar’s gains against other currencies, increased demand for the US currency from importers put pressure on the rupee, but a higher opening in the domestic equity market limited the losses.

The domestic currency had lost three paise to close at 60.53 against the American unit in Monday’s trade, following sustained dollar demand from importers amid firm cues from overseas.

Meanwhile, the benchmark Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE) Sensex gained 81.53 points, or 0.30 per cent, to trade at new life-time high of 26,949.08 in early trade on Tuesday.
