Rupee up by 3 paise against US dollar

Mumbai, August 10: The Indian rupee today gained 3 paise to 46.12/13 against the US dollar, its highest close since June 21, 2010, on the back of firm domestic equity markets amid strong capital inflows.

The domestic currency started firm at 46.02/04 at the Interbank Foreign Exchange as against last weekend’s close of 46.15/16 a dollar.

Forex dealers said the rupee rose smartly in early trade due to dollar selling by banks and exporters amid firm equities and increased capital inflows. Foreign Institutional Investors pumped in over USD 710 million last week and have injected nearly USD 11.37 billion into the domestic economy in the current year so far, which has supported the rupee’s rise against the dollar.

However, late dollar demand from importers weighed on the rupee’s fortunes and it fell back to a low of Rs 46.15 before concluding the day slightly better at Rs 46.
