Tension prevailed in some parts of Tamil Nadu following rumours that women complained of irritation and allergic infection after applying henna (Mehendi).
Reports received at the police headquarters here today said there have been rumours in some district, including at Ambur and Vaniyambadi Taluks in Vellore district.
As the rumours spread thick and fast, couple of shops selling henna powder and paste in the form of cones, were
ransacked, forcing the shopkeepers to down their shutters.
Though no such incident was reported in Chennai, City Police Commissioner J K Tripathy warned of strict action
against those spreading rumours through SMS that applying ‘mehendi’ was dangerous for women and urged people not to believe them.
In various parts of the city and its suburbs, SMS were being circulated since last evening that applying ‘mehendi’ would affect their health.
