Rumours on Assam riots motivated: Home minister

While addressing at a 3-day police chiefs’ conference in New Delhi, Home Minister Sushilkumar Shinde said the communal colour given to the recent ethnic violence in Assam was “unfortunate” and asserted that the “motivated” online rumours were evidence of terrorists resorting to cyber space. He stressed the need for security chiefs to become cyber savvy to locate malicious content and indentify the perpetrators.

He regretted the heavy loss of lives and displacement of people due to riots. He saw the motivated rumours and malicious use of social networking as a new challenge for the country.

“There is increasing evidence of resort taken by terrorists to the cyberspace domain. The recent incident in Bangalore in Karnataka, Pune in Maharashtra and other states of the country where motivated rumours and irresponsible use of the social media networking media posed a new challenge,” he said addressing the country’s top police brass here.
