Rubber Duck is probably the closest that grungy Bombay rockers will come to a bath. A new recording studio run of a three bedroom Powai apartment, this is where bands and solo musicians can get their tracks recorded, mixed and mastered, and pay per song. Tub thumping!
The bath-tender here is Anit Gvalani, one half of the sibling duo that runs Bandra’s gourmet burger joint Gostana (it’s moving to a new location but more on that later!). An audio engineer by degree and profession, a Foo Fighters fan by choice, Anit used to be the drummer in alternate rock band Cusp and previously worked at Sydney’s Studios 301. Suddenly, all those live stream concerts and lovely playlists at Gostana make more sense.

Rubber Duck Studios may be run out of his home, but Anit takes care to point out that it’s no quack joint. The space is decked out with Roland TD-12K V-Drums and more. The room isn’t fully sound proofed yet, but having a floor to himself with no neighbours, helps. Here, packages start at Rs 3,000 per song as opposed to other studios that charge by the hour, thus making it more economical. “I remember what it’s like to be a drummer in college and strapped for cash. Rubber Duck Studios will try and be broke band-friendly,” says Anit.
And if you sing for your supper, you can maybe even score a Gostana burger and get Anit to turn your Jim Morisson cassette into a CD. That’s one way to get your foot in the Doors.
