RS polls on June 17 for 11 UP seats

New Delhi, May 07: The Election Commission has announced the poll schedule for the biennial election to 11 Rajya Sabha seats from Uttar Pradesh. Eleven members of the Rajya Sabha from the state will retire on July 4.

The notification for the biennial election will be issued on May 31. While the last date for filing nomination papers is June 7, the scrutiny of the papers will be held the next day. Last date for the withdrawal of papers is June 10, and if required, polling will be held on June 17.

The 11 Rajya Sabha members retiring on July 4 are Kamal Akhtar, Nand Kishore Yadav, Jaya Bachchan, Bhagwati Singh, Ram Naryan Sahu, Amir Alam Khan and Brij Bhushan Tewari (SP), Ambeth Rajan, Satish Chandra Mishra and Sri Ram Pal (BSP) and Arun Shourie (BJP).

Each candidate will need 34 first preference votes to win the seat. The BSP can easily get its six members elected while for winning the seventh seat, it is short of 12 first preference votes. While the SP can win two seats, the BJP can win one seat.

The EC also announced the poll schedule for the by-election to the lone Assembly seat, Domariyaganj, in Siddarth Nagar district. The by-election has been necessitated by the death of sitting BSP legislator Taufiq Ahmed.
