Rs 600-crore package likely for farmers

Hyderabad, December 16: The state government will come out with a package for the benefit of farmers affected by the recent rains. The size of the package would be about Rs.600 crore. Chief minister N Kiran Kumar Reddy will make an announcement in the Assembly on the package on December 16, the last day of the winter session of the Assembly.

According to health minister DL Ravindra Reddy, an elaborate exercise was going on in the state government in addressing the problems being faced by the farmers. “It will one of the best packages ever offered to the farmers,” Ravindra Reddy told reporters in the Assembly lobbies. Ravindra Reddy, who represents Mydukuru in Kadapa district in the Assembly, said that the Congress was looking for a strong candidate for the byelections to Kadapa Lok Sabha seat which is likely to be held in February. “Efforts are going on to bring together the leaders who drifted away from the Congress unable to stomach the overbearing attitude of YS Rajasekhara Reddy. A leader from among them would be fielded in the election,” Ravindra Reddy said.

To a question, Ravindra Reddy said that for a government to implement all the programmes of late YSR, it would require a budget as huge as India’s. At present, only the schemes that merited immediate attention were being addressed. Even in Jalayagnam, one had to tread carefully and invest money only in projects that are viable. “For instance, take Devadula. No less than a leader like Sonia Gandhi had switched on the motors. But today, the motors are in Germany, undergoing repair,” he said.
