To mitigate drinking water problem in the ensuing Summer, the Telangana Government today released Rs 55 crore to take immediate steps in the water scarcity habitations in 231 mandals of seven drought districts.
Revenue (Disaster Management) Department Commissioner and Principal Secretary B R Meena announced the release of funds for the purpose and directed the district Collectors concerned to take steps on war-footing. Rural Water Supply Scheme Engineer-in-Chief, in his contingency Action plan 2016, submitted estimated cost of Rs 310.61 crore and sought release of Rs 108.71 crore for taking immediate temporary measures in the affected areas.
As usual, the backward Mahbubanagar district got major allocation of Rs 15.70 crore, Medak Rs 10.82 crore, Nizamabad Rs 8.47 crore, Ranga Reddy Rs 7.77 crore, Nalgonda Rs 5.18 crore, Karimnagar Rs 4.47 crore and Warangal Rs 2.59 crore respectively.
In a press release, Meena directed the district Collectors to launch works in advance to prevent shortage and cater to the drinking water needs of people in these districts. He also asked them to initiate measures to ensure drought-hit villages get drinking water supply by taking up related works of transportation, hiring of private sources, flushing, deepening of borewells and open wells and so on. According to reports, it was estimated that 231 mandals are worst hit by drought in seven districts in Telangana State. (NSS)
