Hyderabad, April 28: The ‘nakabandi’ organised by the city police at various junctions across the city has added a decent Rs 3 lakh to their coffers through compounding fee collected from drunken drivers and other violators of the Motor Vehicle Act. Over 140 vehicles were seized.
In the two-hour exercise which started around 11 p.m on Monday, police checked over 10,000 vehicles apart from 85 lodges in the city.
City Police Commissioner AK Khan, in a release, said that extensive nakabandi was organised as a `crime control measure’ and officers and men of all wings of the city police, including law and order, traffic, crime, Task Force, Special Branch and City Security took part in the exercise.
Vehicle checking and frisking of persons was taken up at all important junctions in all the five law and order zones.
About 10,500 vehicles were checked at 28 places. A total of 694 cases were registered, 109 vehicles detained and a compounding fee of Rs 82,610 collected from violators. The Central zone accounted for the highest number of checks, cases and fines.
Traffic police collected a compounding amount of Rs 2.25 lakh from 198 drunk drivers and 151 others for offences under the MV Act and 37 vehicles were seized.
The Central Crime Station sleuths conducted checks on 85 lodges and frisked 432 persons.
Khan said police would organise ‘nakabandi’ more often to keep the police on alert, control crime and to check drunken driving. “These checks will also ensure that hotels and lodges adhere to the guidelines communicated to them and thus ensure safety and security to general public from criminal activities in general and terror and Maoists activities in particular,” Khan said.
He appealed to the general public to cooperate with police in such operations which are carried out for their safety and make the city secure.
