Rs 1,000-crore loss likely

Vijayawada, October 16: The loss due to flood havoc in Krishna district alone is expected to touch Rs 1,000 crore.

It is estimated that the Irrigation department has suffered a loss of around Rs 350 crore due to breaches to the bunds at various places in the district has made the situation even worse.

The department, in a report to the State Government, has asked for Rs 7.5 crore immediately for carrying out repairs.

The R & B Department has also suffered major losses in the rural areas of the district during the floods, which, officials of the department assess has damaged the road on a stretch of 408 km in the district. The loss arising out of this is estimated at Rs 62 crore.

The department, in a report to the Government, has requested an interim fund release of Rs 8 crore to provide immediate relief. On the other hand, crop loss is expected to be around Rs 200 crore, what with crops being damaged in almost 70,000 acres in the 95 villages and lands surrounding these in 16 mandals affected by floods in the district.

Meanwhile, a comprehensive study on crop loss is still going on and the total loss is expected to be over Rs 200 crore.

Meanwhile, the Panchayat Raj department is also reported to have incurred a loss of around Rs 250 crore. The loss has been primarily due to loss due to breaches to local ponds constructed with the Panchayat Raj funds besides damage to the drainage systems in the villages and some schools and some water tanks.

Meanwhile, the Fisheries department, in a report to the State Government, has also mentioned about losses running into tens of crores.
