Roorkee’s IITians to face action for skipping Yoga sessions?

ROORKEE: As the week-long Yoga sessions at IIT Roorkee witness low attendance, the Institution is allegedly planning action against the students. According students the IIT preparing a list of absentees who has less than 60% attendance during June 18 to 24 Yoga celebration session.

A news published in Times of India which quoted many students as saying the institute is planning action against students who had less attendance in the yoga sessions.

IIT Roorkee authorities denied taking any action, however they acknowledged that they are compiling the data of absent students for record.

Speaking to Times of India, DK Naurial Dean said that “We did not pressure any student to attend the yoga sessions in the institute and there is no plan of taking disciplinary action against non-attending students. We are just compiling the records of students who did not attend as we wanted to know the reasons behind their absence.” The institute had exempted students who were observing ‘roza’ as well as those appearing for the CSIR UGC NET exam on June 19 from participation in the programme.

The students always live under huge pressure of completing studies on time and yoga participation was extra-curricular programmes which becomes difficult for students.

A student said that they had been under added pressure ever since reports started circulating that the institute was contemplating disciplinary action against those who hadn’t showed up. “We have been hearing that post-graduate students will be fined while some marks of under graduate students will be deducted.
