Hyderabad, January 07: The Andhra Pradesh prison authorities, who decided to allow inmates with good conduct to live with their families, will get separate rooms built within the premises of jails for the purpose.
Gopinath Reddy, DGP (Prisons), said that rooms will be built within the premises in two open air jails — Anantapur and Cherlapally. In these open air jails, prisoners are mostly involved in agriculture works and animal rearing.Rural Development Trust, an NGO, has come forward to fund construction of rooms in the jails.
These rooms will also have kitchen where families can cook food for themselves and essential commodities will be supplied by the prison department.
The construction of the rooms is expected to be complete by March end. “Separation from families will have a great impact on criminals.
Human right activists feel that prisoners too have a right to maintain bond with families even while undergoing rigorous punishment. Steps like this will help prisoners and their families to feel together,” a prison official said.
The prison authorities, who intend to launch this facility soon after completion of building rooms, said that about 380 inmates have been identified to be maintaining good conduct. They will be allowed to live with their families for at least ten days in a month due to limited availability of rooms.
