Rodents nibble on corpses at government hospital

Hyderabad, January 28: Exposing the sorry state of affairs in government hospitals, rodents partially ate three dead bodies in the Mahaboobnagar government hospital morgue, leading to protests by the relatives of the deceased.

According to reports reaching here, the bodies were kept in the mortuary after post-mortem yesterday and when the kin of the deceased went to collect the bodies today, they found the bodies partially eaten. The bodies of two children who drowned in a pond at Bhootpur were among the three corpses.

Two children, Vinod (13) and Naik (14) of Karivena tanda under Bhootpur police station had gone to graze cattle and later entered the pond to bathe. But the pond being recently silted, the children fell into a deep pit and drowned. Their bodies were recovered from the pond yesterday and were shifted to the government hospital for an autopsy by night. The hospital authorities asked the childrens’ kin to come today morning and collect them after the autopsy.

But they were shocked when they noticed that rodents had eaten away parts of the bodies. “Rodents partially ate the nose and lips of the two children. There were also bite marks on some other parts of the bodies,” Mahaboobnagar II Town police said.

The relatives protested and demanded action against the hospital authorities.

But the hospital authorities claimed that the parts had been eaten away by the fish in the pond in which they drowned.

The relatives, however, contended that there were no such marks when the bodies were shifted to the mortuary yesterday.

Police pacified the agitating relatives who dispersed after receiving the bodies of the children.

Sources said the body of another person from Devarakadra was also bitten by rodents.
