Mumbai, August 27: The Rafiq Ahmed Kidwai (RAK) Marg police have arrested four members of “Bol Bacchan Gang” who robbed old women of their ornaments on the road. The robbers mostly targeted those who walkedalone in the afternoon.
Naresh Jaiswal, 28, Mangesh Kardulkar, 35, Ashok Borghade, 32 and Shivnath Nayadu were arrested at Sewri on Sunday and gold ornaments worth at Rs1.8 lakh were recovered from them. All are residents of Vashi Naka in Chembur and Jaiwal is the gang leader.
“They were remanded in judicial custody for 15 days by the Bhoiwada Court on Tuesday,” police inspector Milind Idekar of the RAK Marg police station said, adding that a manhunt had been launched to nab their key associate Anil Shetty.
API Sanjay Nikam said, “The gang particularly targeted old woman walking on the road alone in the afternoon when the streets are less crowded. After selecting the target, two robbers posing as policemen would approach their victims wearing gold ornaments, while their two other associates kept watch on the movements of policemen and the public.
“The gang members would then tell their victims that because many incidents of robbery had been reported in the area, they should part with their jewellery and hand it over to them for custody. The old women would get confused. Not knowing what to do, they would part with the jewellery. After getting the jewellery, the robbers used to keep them engaged in a friendly conversation and would then slip out. The women would then realise that they had been duped,” Nikam said.
Idekar said the gang members were involved in such robberies for the past six years in Mumbai and Navi Mumbai. More than 100 cases were registered against them in various police stations. With the arrest of the gang, the RAK police have solved seven such cases registered for the past year in Sewri,” Idekar said.
