Roadside blast kills 21 in S Afghanistan

Kabul, August 06: A roadside bomb has targeted a farm tractor’s trailer in southern Afghanistan, killing 21 civilians and wounding six other people.

The explosion happened on a road in Sangin district of the southern province of Helmand, Defense Ministry spokesman Gen. Mohammad Zahir Azimi told AFP.

Farm tractors are often seen in Afghanistan’s rural areas with trailers attached for transporting people.

In a separate incident on Wednesday, a US soldier from the International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) was killed in a roadside blast in western Afghanistan, the NATO-led force said on Thursday.

Despite the presence of some 100,000 international soldiers in Afghanistan, the war-torn country continues to suffer from Taliban-linked violence and terror attacks two weeks ahead of the key presidential election on August 20.
