Hyderabad, May 12: A narrow culvert near Shopper’s Stop in Begumpet which had become a major bottleneck in free flow of traffic, is being widened by the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC), who expect to complete the work in the next two months.
GHMC officials told Express that works relating to construction of culvert on both sides and widening of roads has been taken up at a cost of `80 lakh. Officials added that efforts are also being to acquire two more private properties, Allauddin Buildings and Jabbar Buildings, which are also major bottleneck, to make the entire Sardar Patel road free from obstructions.
As part of implementation of the Master Plan for Inner Ring Road, road widening to 150 feet, from Begumpet Flyover to Sardar Patel road has been taken up, for which many properties had to be taken over. However, few properties could not be taken over after their owners filed for compensation. One such property belonging to M/s.
Kochar got affected to an extent of 1,003 sq yds on the north side and 391 sq. yds on the other side, according to a GHMC official.
The civic body then initiated private negotiations with owners of the land as the building was a major cause of traffic jams in the area. After a lot of persuasion, the latter consented to hand over the land and a GO was accordingly issued by the government for payment of `3.41 crore compensation to Vijay Kochar. The property was taken over by GHMC officials on Wednesday.
