Road underbridge to reduce travel time

Hyderabad, February 04: A four-lane road underbridge (RuB) being constructed between Fatehnagar and Nature Cure Hospital stations will be completed by March 31.

The RuB is being built using the modern Box Pushing Technique, which has enabled the South Central Railway (SCR), to carry on construction without disturbing train traffic.

Once the RuB is completed, it would provide direct connectivity between Begumpet and Fathenagar. It would also reduce the travel time for motorists using the present route through Begumpet- Green Park hotel- Lal Bungalow- Sheeshmahal- Balkampet.

Explaining about the technology, SCR chief administrative officer (constructions), SK Sharma said nearly 75 percent of works have been completed and the remaining would be completed in another two months.

The RuB is part of the link road project connecting Raj Bhavan road to Balkampet and Fathenagar.

The GHMC has provided necessary funds of Rs.13.48 crore.

Sharma said the bridge consists of two vents 12.8 m wide and 6.70 m high, to accommodate two lane roads, each with footpath. Each vent has three pre-cast RCC box segments using readymixed concrete.

These pre-cast segments are pushed across the railway line with help of specially- designed 15 thrust bed and jacking equipments.

The earth is excavated through an excavator and lifted from the bottom to ground level with help of specially made lifting cranes, Sharma said. Care has been taken to remove the excavated earth and rock by means of tippers in the night. As the area is rocky and blasting is prohibited, rocks were removed by chiseling or rock splitter. The SCR engineering Department have taken required safety precautions so that there is no risk in pushing the box under running trains, the CAO said.
