Roads in AP turned red on Sunday with accidents at different places, at least five persons were killed in a lorry-auto-rickshaw collision at Pedapalaparru village under Mudinepalli mandal. Four more injured were admitted to the Government Hospital in Gudivada.
In yet another accident, two persons were killed when the car in which they were traveling hit a roadside tree at Pitchaturu village in Chittoor district.
The victims were identified as ID Prasad (13), who was on the motorcylce, and pedestrians S Mahalakshmi (70) and R Venkanna (55). Prasad, a Class VII class of Chaitanya School, was riding along with his parents, Srinivas Rao and Vijaya Lakshmi, on the bike. While he got crushed under the wheels, his parents were thrown off the vehicle due to the impact and lost consciousness.
They were shifted to a private hospital, where their condition is said to be serious. Mahalakshmi, who arrived from Vijayawada to visit her son, was looking for an autorickshaw, when the bus hit her. Venkanna, a daily wage earner, was waiting for a bus. Both died on the spot.
Driver of the bus, who was reportedly in an inebriated condition, fled from the spot but later surrendered to the police. He claimed brakes of the bus had failed. Meanwhile, six people were killed in Krishna district when a lorry hit an auto. Four more died and several others injured in Chittoor and Srikakulam districts in similar accidents.
