The long-pending demand to rename the Indiranagar 100-ft Road after Karnataka’s renowned folklorist, will finally be fulfilled, as the BBMP Mayor, B.S. Sathyanarayana gave a green signal to it and said in a recent press conference that the official renaming ceremony will take place here on August 31 at 11.30 a.m.
The decision to rename the road was taken in 2006 when former Mayor Mumtaz Begum passed a resolution in council. However, it was not implemented and was being postponed for various reasons.
Though a resolution was passed eight years ago they failed to put into practice it despite repeated requests been made before BBMP to implement the resolution.
Whereas, the D.J. Halli councilor, Sampath Raj had been urging the Mayor to look into the issue in the previous council meetings.
The issue came to the notice when pro-Kannada organizations, led by leader Vatal Nagaraj, staged a protest in the BBMP head office recently. The protestors also urged the government to institute an award in Dr. Khan’s name. Later, the Mayor assured them to rename the road at the earliest.
Dr. Kareem Khan was born in 1908, in Sakleshpur. He passed away here on July 29, 2006. Dr Khan made the language and culture of Karnataka, his force-majeure. During India’s freedom struggle, he brought to bear the power of his pen and oratory skills, and fought alongside with major Gandhian personalities.
Leading by example, he strove towards a seamless integration of Muslim and Hindu culture and spiritual practice. He actively contributed to the recording, chronicling, composition and recital of Kannada folk art, dance and poetry and their modern expression through movies.
He worked as an editor and sub editor of two publications Loka Mitra of Dharwad and Antharanga of Udupi in the 1930’s. Courtesy: Karnataka Muslims
