RJD activists protest outside Bihar Assembly over police brutality

Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) leaders and activists staged a protest outside the Bihar State Assembly on Thursday against the increasing police brutalities on contractual teachers.

Teachers in Patna city faced the wrath of police on Tuesday as they were beaten by batons, fired upon with water cannons and tear gas shells during their protest outside the state assembly.

RJD lawmaker Raghavendra Pratap Singh expressed his ire over the cases registered against the contractual teachers.

“The teachers were beaten by the police. There are reports that cases have been registered against teachers under sections which include attempt to murder, their attempt to set government property on fire. The government is trying to suppress the teachers. We will not tolerate it,” said Singh.

The legislators threatened to intensify their protests if the government failed to resolve the issue.

The opposition disrupted the proceedings of the assembly on Wednesday, as they demanded debate on the issue.

Thousands of public school teachers gathered outside the provincial assembly on Tuesday (March 05) to press their demand for an increase in their basic salaries and shouted slogans against chief minister Nitish Kumar and the state government.

The slogans and chants of the protesters soon turned into shouts of despair pain as police officials fired water cannons and tear gas shells to disperse the gathering.

In response the protesters resorted to stone pelting at the police officials, who were dressed in complete riot control gear.

Soon the gates of the provincial assembly were opened and a squad of police officials charged with batons on the protesters smacking all who came in their path.

The ruthless assault by the police did not provide any respite to women, who tried to evade the swinging wooden sticks. Police officials formed groups to corner protesters and beat them on their legs and hips.

Some of the protesters suffered injured on their heads and were escorted by their colleagues, while the police continued to swing their sticks. (ANI)
