Rise in crimes against women in Telangana State

There has been a significant rise in crimes against women in Telangana State. Although, there is a slight decrease in overall percentage of crimes against women under 10 different heads, cases like rape, outraging of modesty and women’s murder have registered an increase this year compared to previous year.

As against 313 murders in 2013 (up to November), this year 329 women were murdered in the same period this year. Rape cases too have increased from 781 in 2013 to 893 in 2014. Similarly, the cases of Outraging of Modesty increased from 2,302 in 2013 to 2,907 this year, registering a rise by 26.28 per cent.

These statistics were disclosed by Director General of Police Anurag Sharma while addressing the annual press conference at State Police Headquarters at Lakdi-ka-Pul here on Monday. The DGP claimed that the overall crimes against women have decreased by 5.44%. As against 12,472 cases in 2013, this year only 11,794 cases have been reported. There were 66 Dowry Murders (72 in 2013); 258 Dowry Deaths (270); 566 Abetment of Suicide (589); 5,366 Harassment cases (6198); 507 DP Act (1002); 542 Kidnapping & Abduction (2302) and 360 cases of Bigamy were reported this year as against 346 cases registered last year.

The DGP informed that there has been a slight decrease by 0.41% in the total number of cognizable crimes in Telangana State. As against 93,780 cases registered in 2013, this year 93,392 cases were reported. There were 1156 Murders and Murders for Gain; 13,183 Hurt Cases; 691 Rioting; 796 Kidnap & Abduction; 328 Dacoities & Robberies; 18,123 Burglaries & Ordinary Thefts; 7,05 Cheatings and Criminal Breach of Trust; 61 Counterfeiting and 38,836 cases were registered under other Sections of Indian Penal Code.

Anurag Sharma said that the Law & Order has been maintained well in the State with political/faction violence, activities of Maoists, communal organisations and terrorist outfits under effective check. The Telangana police effective handled general elections, important festivals, assembly sessions and other agitations. Stating that as many as 49,791 cases are under investigation across the State as on November 31, he said that all measures are being taken to finalise these cases expeditiously. He also informed that a total of 207,706 cases are pending trial in various trial courts in Andhra Pradesh.

The DGP informed that the Cyber Crime has almost double in Telangana compared to last year. While 334 Cyber Crime cases were reported in 2013, this year 618 cases have been registered. They include 12 cases registered by CID, 311 by Hyderabad City Police, 238 by Cyberabad Police and 57 cases in rest of Telangana State.

“With the dawn of new Telangana State, the State Government has given new impetus for strengthening police department,” the DGP said while appreciating the increase in budget allocation for the police department. He also listed out various measures being taken to strengthen and upgrade the department.

Anurag Sharma said that the police department has initiated the process of identifying the vacancies across the State and would send the complete list to the State Government for further action. (INN)
