Right To Education Act effective from April 1

New Delhi, February 22: A law to make education a fundamental right of every child in the age group of six to 14 years has been notified and will be effective from April one, President Pratibha Patil today said.

In her address to the joint sitting of Parliament, she said the Right of Children to Free and Compulsory Education Act has been notified.

The Act, which was passed by Parliament in August last year, also earmarks 25 per cent seats to children from economically weaker sections in private schools. It stipulates that the local governments will ensure that the children in the specified age bracket are getting elementary education.

Patil said the Government is committed to bring a paradigm shift in the education sector based on expansion, inclusion and excellence and will soon set up an overarching body to regulate higher education and research in India.
