Right ankle injured, Fortis doctors operates left ankle

New Delhi: In a case of gross medical negligence, doctors at the Fortis hospital, Shalimar Bagh, Delhi, operated upon the healthy left ankle of Ravi Rai, 24, instead of the injured one during the surgical procedure. Ravi Rai, a resident of Ashok Vihar, injured his right leg after falling down a flight of stairs on Sunday. He was rushed to Fortis Hospital in Shalimar Bagh, where he was prescribed a series of medical tests that included a CT scan and X-Ray. Doctors at Fortis said Ravi had suffered a fracture and his condition was serious.

Ravi’s father, Ramkaran Rai said “The doctors at Fortis told us there was a fracture in the ankle of his right leg and they needed to do an immediate surgery to insert pins in the ankle for support. We trusted them and agreed for the surgery. When our son gained consciousness, we realised that instead of the right leg, his left leg had been operated upon. The left leg was perfectly fine.”

The youth’s father has lodged a police complaint, accusing Fortis of “grave negligence”. Fortis later issued a statement saying necessary action would be taken against persons found guilty. Ravi, a chartered accountancy student, was shifted to another private hospital for further treatment.
