Tehran, February 28: A senior advisor to the Leader of the Islamic Revolution has compared recent revolutions across Islamic countries to a “tremor” that has shaken the political structures of the region.
The latest developments in North Africa and the Middle East would also revolutionize the social, cultural and economic structures of the region down the line, Gholamali Haddad Adel was quoted by IRNA as saying on Sunday.
“Muslim revolutions in the Middle East and the North African regions have brought about an Islamic awakening”, he said, adding that the significance of these revolutions are not less than the collapse of the Soviet Union.
A wave of revolutionary demonstrations has rocked the Middle East and North Africa since December 2010, which has led to regime changes in Tunisia and Egypt.
Revolution fever which has also swept across Libya has been met with brutal suppression and horrific bloodshed, as a result of clashes between protesters and supporters of the country’s embattled leader Muammar Gaddafi.
Two thousand people have been reportedly killed in Libya so far despite the regime’s denial that any kind of force has been used against the people.
The Iranian lawmaker cited despotism, suppression and anti-Islam inclinations of the heads of beleaguered governments of the region, who are at the moment facing popular uprisings, as the main reasons behind the popular revolutions in the area.
Connecting the latest revolutions with Iran’s Islamic Revolution, the former Majlis (parliament) Speaker concluded that Muslim protesters need to be vigilant against the hidden hands of “global arrogance” and preserve their unity.
