The Revolution Begins: Muslim community responds to Zahid Ali Khan’s call for simple marriages

It was a marriage with a difference. No show off, no vulgar display of money, no wastage and no dinner. It was performed as per the Islamic traditions and was as simple as it could be.

The marriage function at Kings Function Hall at Engine Bowli on Friday night was an exemplary event where both, the bride and groom’s parents performed simple marriage to convey a strong message to the society. Both the families are well-settled and could have easily afforded a lavish marriage like others. However, following the Sunnah of Prophet Mohammad (PBUH), they made the event a simple affair. The guests were served with Haleem, tea and also a food for thought they should also encourage simple marriages in the Muslim society. “If you are needy, then you deserve Zakat, not dowry” was the message displayed in the function hall.

Both, the bride and groom have done their MBAs. The Groom, Rashed Mohammad Abdul Razaq, works as a manger in a Saudi-based company. His father Mr Mohammd Abdul Razaq is based in Jeddah since a long time. The bride’s father Mr Haroon Rasheed Ahmed is a retired employee of IDPL. Speaking on the occasion, Rasheed Ahmed announced that he won’t take dowry and would perform a simple marriage for his only son.

Groom’s father Mr Mohammad Abdul Razaq said that he was influenced with the call given by Siasat Editor Mr Zahid Ali Khan asking people to perform simple marriages and boycott those where dinner is served by the bride’s parents. He said he himself was associated with several organisations and also worked with Mr Aleem Khan Falaki who is campaigning against the dowry system.

The other guests too appreciated Mr Zahid Ali Khan’s stand on lavish marriages and said that simple marriages will improve the economic status of the community. They praised his initiative to weed out the evil of dowry system and waste expenditures on marriages from the Muslim society.

While addressing a Face to Face programme organied by the Siasat and Minority Development Forum on October 23, Mr Zahid Ali Khan gave a call for boycott of marriages where wedding day dinner is served by the bride’s parents. The call was aimed at protecting the deteriorating economic conditions of the Muslim community. Huge expenditure on marriages is one of the major factors for economic backwardness of the Muslim community. People spend their lifetime earnings or borrow money on interest either to display their importance in the society or to make such events memorable. However, in most cases, the bride’s parents are pushed into economic crisis due to such marriages.

In these circumstances, Mr Zahid Ali Khan’s call has had a revolutionary impact and the community has started shelving lavish and wasteful expenditures. This is just the beginning.
