Reversing car leaves 4-year-old boy dead, 5-year-old girl hurt in Panchkula

A four-year-old boy was killed after a car ran over him while reversing in Sector 11, Panchkula, on Monday evening.

Police said victim Aman, 4, was playing with his friend Aashmin, 5, in the parking lot near Geeta Mandir when the accident took place around 7pm.

Inspector Arvind Kumar, Sector-5 station house officer, said: “The car, which was in reverse gear, hit both Aman and Aashmin. It fled following the incident.”

A neighbour rushed the victims to the civil hospital in Sector 6, from where they were referred to the Post Graduate Institute of Medical Education and Research (PGIMER), Chandigarh. While Aman was declared brought dead, the girl was undergoing treatment till the filing of the report. Both victims sustained severe injuries on the head and abdomen, said sources.

Police said Aman’s father, Rajneesh Kumar, and Aashmin’s father, Ishaan, are labourers. The families are from Uttar Pradesh and live in shanties near Geeta Mandir in Sector 11.

“We are looking for footage from nearby closed-circuit television (CCTV) cameras in order to trace the vehicle. A case has been registered under Sections 304 A (causing death by negligence) and 279 (rash driving) of the Indian Penal Code,” said SHO Arvind Kumar.
