Retired SI killed as car catches fire

New Delhi, July 20: A 61-year-old retired Sub Inspector was charred to death inside his car when it caught fire in Outer Delhi, police said today.

The incident took place near Japani Park in Prasant Vihar at around 11.55 pm and the victim has been identified as Rajkumar Chawla, who retired from Delhi Police in 2007.

The car was discovered engulfed with flames by a passer-by who informed fire brigade and police. Two fire tenders were rushed to the spot which doused the fire within 30 minutes, a senior police official said.

“We found the body of Chawla inside the car. He was identified with the help of his driving license. He was rushed to Ambedkar Hospital where doctors declared him brought dead,” the official said.

He was returning from his relatives’ house in Ghaziabad when the car caught fire.
