New Delhi, December 23: With an export ban and import duty abolition helping ease retail prices of onion by Rs 10 to Rs 60-70 per kg in metros, the government was today confident that the situation will improve rapidly.
The impact of high onion prices was also felt on food inflation, which jumped to 12.13 per cent for the week ended December 11 from single digits in the previous week.
According to inflation data, the annualised price rise of onion worked out to 33.48 per cent and on a weekly basis, the increase was 4.56 per cent.
The Committee of Secretaries, headed by Cabinet Secretary K M Chandrasekhar, today reviewed the onion prices and asked railways to provide more rakes for movement of onion from producing regions to retail markets.
