Hyderabad, January 22: Restoring normalcy in the State capital, hit by agitations over Telangana, would be the top priority of the new City Police Commissioner A K Khan.
“The city and also the State is passing through a troubled phase over the past two months. Restoring normalcy in the city at a time of intensified agitations and their impact on the general life is my priority,’’ Khan told reporters after assuming charge today. Khan said controlling rowdyism, mafia, organised crime and also tackling the traffic problem are on his priority list. The Commissioner said his experience in working with the city for six years would help him to perform his duties better. “I had worked with the team of officers presently posted in the city police earlier and this would ensure that we work in a coordinated manner in discharging our responsibilities,’’ he added.
Khan said terrorism was not confined to Hyderabad alone and it is wrong to say Hyderabad is a terror hub for all conspirators. Terrorism is not a new problem but a national and global problem, he said and added that surveillance on such activities would be given priority. “We have been coordinating with police of other districts, states and also with intelligence and Central agencies. The police have caught several important terror elements and also busted terror modules in the past,’’ Khan pointed out. Asked about the involvement of outsiders in the Telangana agitation in the Osmania University, Khan said the police as well as the OU authorities have information on the problem. “The High Court had asked nonboarders to stay out of the campus and even the SHRC had also made the same point,’’ he said.
To a query, Khan said it is the duty of the police to provide security to business establishments which are coming under attack by agitators in the name of bandh.
