Tehran, November 21: A senior Iranian lawmaker says the recent Western-sponsored UN draft resolution, which accuses Iran of human rights violations, is non-binding and is just a propaganda move against Iran.
These resolutions and votes against the Islamic Republic are used as propaganda and are non-binding, MP Mostafa Tabatabainejad told IRNA on Saturday.
He made the remarks in response to the most recent Western-sponsored UN draft resolution, which accuses Iran of violating human rights.
The draft resolution was sponsored by Canada and supported by the United States, the European Union, and other Western countries.
“More than 100 states have abstained or voted against the resolution of the Third Committee of the UN on alleged violations of human rights in Iran, North Korea, and Myanmar,” Tabatabainejad added.
“Only the domineering powers imposed their votes through Canada, and this indicated that there was no consensus on the issue,” Tabatabainejad stated.
He went on to say that the draft resolution is politically motivated and is being used as a means to exert pressure on the Islamic Republic.
“Since the victory of the Islamic Revolution, we have seen many of these resolutions, but we are not worried because they are politicized moves meant to pressure Iran in the international arena,” he added.
In Iran, criminals are treated according to Islamic principles, and other countries deal with them in their own ways, he explained.
The Third Committee of the UN has accused Iran, North Korea, and Myanmar of violating human rights, but the resolution needs to be approved by the UN General Assembly.
The 118-member Non-Aligned Movement and the 57-member Organization of the Islamic Conference have condemned the resolution against Iran.
