Report will be constructive: Srikrishna panel

Hyderabad, December 17: In Hyderabad for a farewell visit before submitting their much-awaited report on the future of Andhra Pradesh, members of the Srikrishna Committee today said they will not deliver a commentary on the state of affairs in AP but render constructive suggestions on its development.

Member-secretary V K Duggal said the report would be objective and its recommendations in the best interests of the people, and will be delivered in time. “The state is bigger than political parties and the nation bigger than any state,” he said.

Justice Srikrishna said that as a judge of two decades’ standing, he delivered scores of judgments that pleased some and hurt some. “For this committee’s study, we took all aspects including the emotions of the people into consideration.

We have put our collective views into the report which will reflect the aspirations of the people.” The judge appealed to political parties to help in keeping the peace after the submission of the report. “It is their bounden duty to ensure peace,’’ he said.

‘’All parties responded positively to our appeal.” Responding to a question, Srikrishna said a mere statement by P Chidambaram in December last year had triggered violence in the state. Though the committee is not expecting trouble after Dec. 31, it is still asking the official machinery to be prepared, he said.

Members Ravinder Kaur, Abusaleh Shariff and Ranbir Singh described their visits to the interior parts of the state as memorable and educative. The committee could not have understood the complexity of the issue without the cooperation of people in the remote areas.

They thanked the state administration, political parties, media and the people for cooperating with them in preparing their report.

The members said whatever may be the fate of the state after their report, the people of AP would have a special place in their hearts.
