Mumbai: Unable to bear repeated dowry demands of the groom’s family the father of the bride canceled his daughter’s wedding in Mumbai, sources said.
The guests arrived at the wedding venue in Malegaon which is about 270km from Mumbai, on Monday were surprised to find the venue empty with no decoration, no celebration at the pandal, but a blackboard with a message from the the bride’s father: the wedding had been canceled over repeated dowry demands and disagreement over a luxurious bed.
On the other side, the bridegroom’s family has denied the allegations and claimed there was no question of dowry and that they are still willing to go through with the marriage.
The father’s bold move against the evil practice of dowry was picked up by social media with many condemning the evil practice while many appreciated the father for taking such a courageous stand.
According to sources, the man who works at a sweet shop is a father of five children and had offered his 22-year-old daughter’s hand in marriage to a carpenter from a neighbouring area. The proposal was finalized by the two families over a year ago.
Surprisingly even though all the preparations were made on the bride’s end the marriage was canceled over a bed it has appeared.
A source close to the bride’s family said the groom’s family had demanded a luxurious bed and since he could not afford the costly bed demand decided to cancel the wedding.
When news source contacted the bridegroom, he said: “Our wedding was finalized over a year ago. When a porter brought the bed and it proved small for my height, my family asked him not to set it up and that it would be done later. The porter called up the girl’s father and misinterpreted what we had said. This resulted in a misunderstanding.”
But a source close to the family said the groom’s family indeed had abused the girl’s father and repeated made dowry demands.
