Reluctance in lake cleaning resulted in mosquito menace, GHMC comes into action

Hyderabad: The hyacinth removal task is getting ignored by GHMC officials. The corporation has identified 34 lakes to remove the weed but only 10 are cleared.

Now the Corporation officials say, “The work would begin soon and will be completed in a month.”

In few lakes, water hyacinth growth was found to have revived in just five days after removal.

According to a GHMC official, the civic body has removed hyacinth in 10 lakes till August, but the weed eventually came back.

So, the corporation has decided to make the contractors accountable for the permanent removal of hyacinth.

The civic body has decided to give the task to contractors for clearing water hyacinth for a period of three years and the work is expected to commence next month.

A senior GHMC official admitting the civic apathy said, “To expedite the work, the civic body has decided to entrust the task of clearing hyacinth in lakes smaller than five acres to the entomology department. The bigger lakes will be handled by the lakes section in association with the irrigation department”.
