Relief from supreme court on NRC

A Bench of Justices Ranjan Gogoi and Rohinton Nariman from the Supreme Court  made it clear that no action shall be taken in accordance with the draft National Register of Citizens (NRC). This decision came after hearing Attorney General for India KK Venugopal, NRC co-ordinator for Assam, Prateek Hajela, and Additional Solicitor General Tushar Mehta, appearing for the State of Assam.

There were 40-lakh odd people who were facing the risk of deportation or being rendered stateless, after their names did not figure out in Assam’s National Register of Citizens (NRC), The Supreme Court asked the Centre to formulate modalities and the Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) including timelines for deciding claims and objections arising out of the publication of the draft NRC.

In this regard, the Court would like to observe that what has been published is only the Complete Draft NRC which naturally being a draft cannot be the basis of any action by any authority.” The apex court made it clear on NRC that the draft cannot be the basis for action by any authority.
