Thiruvannamalai: A 23-year-old jilted lover killed his girlfriend on Monday after she refused to marry him. He surrendered before police a day later, saying that he had murdered her.
The 20-year-old girl was studying in a private college in Vellore. She was found dead with multiple stab wounds on her body near Eechanthangal lake on Tuesday evening, reports India Today.
The villagers refused to take the dead body and staged a protest questioning the safety of women in their area.
The resident of Poongampadi in Polur taluk, Gokulnath, confessed that he murdered his girlfriend when he came to know that she agreed to marry someone else at her parents will. He was in a relationship with her for the last 4 years, Gokulnath said.
After picking up the girl from her college on Monday, he took her near a lake. According to the police, Gokulnath couldn’t persuade her into changing her decision to marry someone else after which he stabbed her multiple times and left her to die near the lake.
The rise in a number of such murders is putting the state in a tight spot as the allegations from the 2016 CAG report stating that the Tamil Nadu government has not properly used the funds allocated to increase the safety of women under the ‘Nirbhaya fund’ have sprung up.
